What inspired you to start your business and why?: I was inspired to start a mentoring program after serving as a mentor throughout college, engaging in lots of community service work and the inspiration I received from my young cousin. The program is actually named after my cousin and it was my way of showing her that all dreams are possible. Working with girls and helping them realize and actualize their potential, brings me so much joy. I have often encountered young women who seek validation from everyone but themselves. This organization reminds girls that the only validation they need is from the person staring back at them in the mirror.

What does your company stand for?: The name IMANEE stands for Instilling My Ability to Naturally Embrace Excellence. The acronym speaks for itself in that our main goal is for girls to know they were born with excellence already instilled in their being. Society creates a need for girls to crave attention from unhealthy outlets and often creates an unrealistic view of what success looks like for girls and women of color. We stay for self awareness, self affirmation and greatness.

How do you create the life you want?: I write down my goals. I have learned the value in celebrating every moment and I look for wins every day. It can be as simple as making someone smile or complimenting another person. When I stopped becoming so obsessed with looking like I am "winning" and actually started celebrating the small victories, life became a lot more enjoyable.

Where do you find inspiration?: I find inspiration from the women who are in my tribe. As an only child, sisterhood has been so important to me since I was a child. The women in my circle are powerhouses. Everyone has their own journey, but we are not afraid to uplift and support each other. I am also blessed to have women mentors who speak to the power in me. Having people who see me in the moments that I can't see myself, is a powerful and inspiring thing.

How has your business made you a better person?: Having these beautiful girls as mentees, has definitely expanded my capacity for love. Also, the joys and pitfalls of running a business has definitely helped me trust myself and my vision. I have learned to be more focused, more disciplined and more discerning of character.

What makes you HUMAN?: My love for people, especially women. There is nothing more humanizing than knowing how to celebrate others when they win. I have learned to celebrate the highs of others and pray with people through their lows. Life is about connections and those connections keep me grounded.

Cut the Crap

It’s crazy that many products we use contain harsh chemicals that are NOT as beneficial as their gimmick implies. Shocker right?! No, not really. Many people don’t look at labels; it’s like shape, color, price and a catchy phrase are enough to make a decision on a product. Thankfully, we have people like Tiffany McCullough that decided to cut through the crap with her business JUNGLE and provide beauty/home care products that are what they say they are...ALL NATURAL. Tiffany’s passion to provide quality products stemmed from her mother’s illness that was associated with a product she was using; good enough to give to the family, good enough for me.

Thankfully, we have people like Tiffany McCullough that decided to cut through the crap with her business JUNGLE and provide beauty/home care products that are what they say they are...ALL NATURAL. Tiffany’s passion to provide quality products stemmed from her mother’s illness that was associated with a product she was using; good enough to give to the family, good enough for me.

upload.jpg

What inspired you to start your business and why?: My mother inspired the birth of my business. After a doctors appointment my mother informed me that her doctor gave her a stern warning to stop using perms and to utilize caution with her beauty care products. The doctor directly associated my mother's illness to her product use. At that time, I went on a mission to research the ingredients that my mother, my household and I were using on a daily basis. I was disappointed with my findings. To know that the beauty industry was supplying families with chemical-filled, synthetic-based products angered me. From that point, I began blending natural and organic, healthy formulations to provide to my mother, my household and to my community.

What does your company stand for?: The JUNGLE brand stands for quality and honesty. I have worked hard to ensure that our clients trust my formulations and know that they are going to get an experience with each use. Never do I want my clients or potential clients to worry about the ingredient listing, except for checking for healthy ingredients that they may be allergic to. In terms of quality, we deliver. For example, there are many inexpensive, minimally beneficial oils that many companies are using as base oils, yet are charging a premium because the formulation is all-natural. I not only strive for a natural/organic formulations -- I strive to use the most beneficial fixings as my base. A premium price warrants a premium product.

upload.jpg

JUNGLE provides a healthy, artisan alternative to beauty care and home care products. We pride ourselves on delivering very aromatic blends. No need to pick apart our product label... it's all good

How do you create the life you want?: It took me years to learn how to live MY best life. I had to learn to appreciate all facets of ME -- the good, the bad and the ugly. I had to trust that what I have to offer in business and relationships is enough and that the gifts that God has given me is more than enough.

I create the life I want by filtering everything through who I was created to be -- a tangible view of this is through vision boards for my relationships, business and ministry.

I don't hold back. I run towards fear. I take on challenges. I travel without hesitation and I network freely. Ultimately, I am living the life that I can look back on without saying "I wish I would have..."

Where do you find inspiration?: I find inspiration in abstract art. I absolutely love wacky, weird and "abnormal" artwork. I think its beautiful. I surround myself with artwork and words of affirmation in my creative space. It helps me to think outside of the box.

How has your business made you a better person?: The peaks and valleys of entrepreneurship births patience and humility. Having built my business form the ground (in the basement of my parents home) with $75 and no savings, I am extremely humbled by where my business has grown to today. As an introvert, networking was a tremendous challenge for me. If I could, I would work from my basement everyday without having to sit in meetings and speak to people about my business. Fortunately, in order to be successful, I had to break out of my mold and explore beyond myself. Getting out of the house, going to events and initiating conversations and meetings, has helped me to learn about other people, other ideas and has helped me to live more freely!

What makes you HUMAN?: My flaws, my quirky moments, my occasional tears, my failures, my success, my laughter, my stretch marks, my nappy hair, my big eyes, my creative mind, my fat fingers, my love... all makes me human. I love the good and the bad about me and aim for excellence over perfection. As a human I make mistakes -- it can't be prevented and that's okay; and I also let others know that it's all a part of being HUMAN!

We all know how important options are in this vein and we are glad Nicole is challenging the industry to make every women feel beautiful. Meet the Queen of Plus-Sized Design!

upload.jpg

What inspired you to start your business and why?: I am sure you are familiar with the excitement you feel coming across the perfect outfit only to be told this is not made in your size.

That was me … in middle school, high school, college, in life. My problem was that I am tall, really tall, AND curvy, so the only clothing that I could find to fit me was in the misses section at my moms favorite store.

While my friends and classmates had trendy clothing, I dressed in very basic neutrals. There were not many options for me. Ultimately, I would purchase women's clothing and alter them to fit my plus-size frame. I started designing out of necessity. It was a sudden job loss that gave me the courage to take my designs to the next level. I know first hand the difficulty many face searching for plus-sized clothing that fits and flatters our unique shape. Now, I have built a brand around their wants and needs as a plus-size woman. I am dedicated to providing you clothing that is sexy, sophisticated that makes them look and feel beautiful!

upload.jpg

What does your company stand for?: Wole’ (pronounced Woah - Lay) is all about tailor made designs for the curvy, voluptuous, and modern woman. My company was developed because great fashion, quality and style should be possible for anyone at every age. By staying true to our philosophy and never sacrificing quality, Wole' helps you obtain beautiful, radiant, and fashion forward pieces that allow your personality to shine through!

How do you create the life you want?: My ultimate goal has always been to live life on my terms. I don't have all of the answer to do that, but as I have listened to my intuition, aligned my energy, and walked in the direction of my dreams....everything has always and continues to work out for me.

Where do you find inspiration?: I find inspiration all over! I like to travel and I pick up inspiration from a beautifully done painting at a museum. The colors in sad or sunset. Vibrant makeup or deep colors of jewels on the ceilings of temples.

How has your business made you a better person?: Absolutely YES! It has allowed me to mature in so many aspects of life. This is the vehicle which will allow me to effect the change that I want to see in the world.

What makes you HUMAN?: I procrastinate. If it is a task that I do not want to do...(ex. washing clothes) I will wait until the very last piece of underwear before I even begin to sort my clothes and wash. Folding .....now that's another topic all together LOL

What inspired you to start your business and why?: At first I was inspired to do curly hair because of growing up with curly hair in a biracial home and my mom not knowing much about how to care for mine. I of course went from stylist to stylist hoping for answers to what I thought was my 'problem' with my hair. My mom being white she honestly didn't know what she was doing so some stylists judged her, others took advantage of her lack of knowledge, while some just experimented and hoped for the best. In my elementary years into highschool I was in and out of different homes due to my dad passing and my mom struggling with drugs. I was able to take tidbits from each home I was in and apply what I could. I found out that I loved doing hair while still experimenting with my own but I haven't quite figured mine out all the way. After being in college and working in accounting in a great company I decided to go to cosmetology school and finally become licensed in cosmetology. In the midst I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder and eventually turned to clean living for remission instead of traditional medicine being that it was doing more harm than good. I then realized it was more than just curly hair I was passionate about, it was educating women about how to care for not just your hair but yourself from the inside out. I saw how amazing my curls were just by letting them be and feeding not just my hair but my body with REAL things. It was amazing and what I had been looking for for so long. That is when I found that good health is what makes the outside flourish whether it was hair or body or even spirit. I was always passionate about creating an environment that was free of judgement but full of encouragement and real genuine care. So that's what I did. I started Sess Lee Curls and have helped young girls who used to be me as well as encouraged women to feel confident with their own hair while giving them the tools to care for it beyond just styling. Having a precious curly haired girl of my own just propelled me into this vision even more which started the invention of my hair product.

What does your company stand for?: Educating and creating an environment that makes you better after being in it. Whether it's your mood, your knowledge, your perspective, your look or even your belief. I also believe that if I focus mainly on helping my clients get their hair healthy as it can be then styling comes easy. It's the caring-for that has been missing.

upload.jpg

How do you create the life you want?: By planting the right seeds. I believe God so I believe you put into the world what you believe it needs more of. Also being conscious of who I give my energy to and who's energy I want to allow into my space.

Where do you find inspiration?: In people and experiences where I'm challenged to grow. And reading..I love to read.

How has your business made you a better person?: It's made me be conscious of following what God has put into my spirit to do and not where the money is regardless of where the world is moving. Knowing that as long as I follow what my purpose is for each season then God will make sure I'm always taken care of. And as women we all deal with the same things and all want the same things just in different ways. Comparing ourselves crushes what God put inside of us and takes us further from it so why not help each other get there because either way you will always receive what's yours.

What makes you HUMAN?: That I can do many things and not be confined to one particular title.

Take back the community and then some...

A community is a group of people sharing a common goal and the goal should be to BUILD and PROSPER. We have all seen businesses come and go, just as much as we have seen outsider businesses come through and wipe out local smaller ones. Tiffaine Stephens decided to figure out why ‘outsiders’ could come in and benefit more than the community itself. With her business, The Image Republic, Tiffaine has created proven tactics to take back what’s ours. Through empowerment and strong business development tools, The Image Republic can help clients prosper while building and growing.

With her business, The Image Republic, Tiffaine has created proven tactics to take back what’s ours. Through empowerment and strong business development tools, The Image Republic can help clients prosper while building and growing.

Tiffaine Stephens - IR-0232.jpg

What inspired you to start your business and why?: As a young marketer, I saw the opportunity to provide small businesses with services that may not ordinarily have access to. Having been born and raised in East Orange, New Jersey, a low-income neighborhood, I have witnessed what can happen to a community when small business development isn't a focus. People who are not from the community start to move in and generate their own wealth, often times not directly contributing to the needs of the community stakeholders. I wanted to have a direct impact on the growth of communities like East Orange to hopefully spur generational wealth for underrepresented groups.

What does your company stand for?: The Image Republic stands for empowerment. Our goal is to empower our clients to fulfill their vision through strong brand and business development. Our goal is to serve clientele who are adamant about empowering their communities through their work.

How do you create the life you want?: Creating the life I want boils down to one habit - writing. I write my goals down every year, and I revisit them monthly to assess my progress. What's just as important is breaking your goals down by small actions that you can take every day or every week to ensure achievement. I also journal. I don't limit myself to a certain format or tool. I use my notes on my phone or my actual journal and I capture my thoughts in prose, poetry, or blog format. Being able to reflect on my day, my actions, and most importantly, my feelings, keeps me honest about how much progress I'm actually making.

Where do you find inspiration?: I find the most inspiration in music, especially hip hop. I love lyricism and artists who could easily transition to spoken word format. I use music (rhythms, beats, and lyrics) to guide my creative direction when thinking of a new campaign or approach to a client's request.

Tiffaine Stephens.jpg

I also love traveling and exploring new places. Breaking outside of my comfort zone is essential to growing as a creative. Recently, I took a trip to Koh Tao, Thailand, and being able to take in the beauty of the culture spurred so many new ideas.

How has your business made you a better person?: My business has forced me to release fear. For so long, I lived my life in fear of what people think, fear of failure, and even fear of success. Having a business has taught me that the only way to constantly learn is to constantly fail; and I cannot fail if I don't try. Letting go of fear for my business has in turn forced me to let go of fear in other areas of my personal life.

What makes you HUMAN?: There's a Lupe Fiasco line in his song, Real: "Cause on the low, being po', make you humble"

My upbringing forces me to always be compassionate to others, and willing to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Wearable knits that are good for the environment are Ceresa Newsome's thing! Building relationships with factories and suppliers in Brooklyn, New York makes the Sien Knitwear brand trustworthy and one who’s concerned about the customer experience! Fusing motherhood and business, Ceresa is finding her way in the world of sustainability. Meet the Queen of Knits!

Sien Knitwear - _DSC2193.jpg

What inspired you to start your business and why?: Formally trained as a Fashion Designer, I have been passionate about fashion as long as I can remember. Though I love all that the fashion industry offers, I've come to learn that there was something important missing. After receiving my Master’s Degree in Design Management from Pratt Institute, and considering the experience I've gained from previous roles in the fashion and related industries, I decided that the time had come for me to realize my dream of starting my own fashion brand.

I formed Sien Knitwear to be able to create beautiful knitwear that will inspire consumers, and to also inform them that they can be stylish and live an environmentally sustainable lifestyle at the same time. Currently, brands are focused more on the style and not so much on the potential impact of their products.

What does your company stand for?: Sien Knitwear values style, quality, and sustainability. Our focus is on creating high-quality knitwear using all natural and/or recycled materials that are not harmful to the environment. We pride ourselves on our responsible production practices, as our garments are currently produced in New York City, where we are able to build relationships with our factories, and be involved in every part of the production process.

How do you create the life you want?: As a fairly new mom and business owner, I would admit that it has been a challenge creating the life that I want. I appreciate the flexibility that I have with my schedule, as my own boss, but it is a work in progress, as both my son and my business are fairly young and require a lot of my time. Balancing work and family, while also finding me time has been a difficult feat. I definitely put all of my faith in God who strengthens me and allows me to do all that I do. I do not let fear stop me from moving forward when God says yes. I find it helpful to take small steps forward to keep the momentum going, and stop to take breaths when necessary.

CeresaNewsome.jpg

Where do you find inspiration?: I find inspiration everywhere and in everything! My favorite place for inspiration is on the street. I love observing people and would always get clear visions for designs when looking at people, especially here in NYC. I also love to look at abstract art for inspiration.

How has your business made you a better person?: I've never felt so vulnerable in my adult life as I do now that I have my own business. This vulnerability has stretched me and forced me out of my comfort zone, which has made me a better and stronger person. I now see life through a different lens, always thinking about creative ways to solve problems. I truly believe it's what I was made to do.

What makes you HUMAN?: I have feelings, I make mistakes, and I'm okay with that. I strive for perfection and sometimes forget that I'm human, and no one is perfect. We are so hard on others and ourselves sometimes. I keep this in mind so that I don't run myself ragged.

One word comes to mind when we think of, Avant-Garde Home and that is “Luxury.” If you’ve done your research like us, you know that there aren’t many home-decor brands out there, let alone, LUXURY ones. Pair the pillows with the oil-burning options and candles, and you have a self-care date night with your own damn self! Avant-Garde even has a wick trimmer, so your candle lasts as long as possible. We’re excited about this brand and Myeshia Brown’s stance on sprinkling our home with eye-catching and scented goodies. Meet the Queen of Luxury Fragrance & Home Decor!

What inspired you to start your business and why?: The vision of Avant-garde Home came from a simple prayer; "God, what is it that YOU want ME to do?". I never knew that He would direct me to use my gift of creativeness and art to start a luxury home fragrance and home decor company. So in 2014 after the vision was given to me, I started researching the market and found that there weren't many candle lines that used wood wicks and the wood wick choice was pretty much non-existent with luxury lines. So I began my testing and finally on January 15, 2016, my line officially launched. Being obedient to this calling is one of the best things that I've done.

Myeshia Brown.jpg

What does your company stand for?: Avant-garde, is defined as “people or works that are experimental, radical, or unorthodox with respect to art, culture, or society.” This is exactly what my company stands for as it relates to creating unique spaces in the home or office. I want everyone that purchases a product from my company to embrace their uniqueness no matter how "unorthodox" it may be. It's a gift!

How do you create the life you want?: There are a few things that I do, say, and think to create the life that I want. I create the life that I want to live by keeping God first in my life. That is number one! I know that I would not be where I am today without the strength and focus that He has placed within me and grace that He has given. Secondly, I have to believe in myself and the vision that God has shown me no matter what. In a world that thrives off likes and followers, I have to remain confident in the brand I'm building and understand that this journey is uniquely mine. Stay focused on my plate, stay positive, speak positive, and pour that into others. Third, do the WORK!!!

Where do you find inspiration?: I find inspiration in everything and everyone! I do not limit myself on ways that I can be inspired. I'm inspired by the people in my life and those that are doing positive things...those going after their dreams. I'm inspired by travel, cultures,a and anything artistic. I'm even inspired by smells (lol)! That's a must since I'm a candle maker. Overall, inspiration is endless!

How has your business made you a better person?: Before starting my business I always believed in helping others but now, I feel that I was given this vision to inspire others around me even more, especially those younger than me, those in need, and other entrepreneurs. I make it a point to carve out more time to pour into others and provide as much encouragement as I can. When you pour into others, you can't help but to grow and to become a better person.

What makes you HUMAN?: Everything! Lol. Nothing that I have or will accomplish will ever change the fact that I am HUMAN. I am not above anyone else and I'm definitely not below. I experience every emotion there is and success, no matter how big or small, would never change what happens within.

Mystique Hargrove - 9CFF15C9-C78A-4FAE-A372-61EC93CE059E.png

What inspired you to start your business and why?:

The teachings of my late grandmother, Olivia (who was better known as “Mother Canada”). My grandmother is the reason for my passion in wellness and taking care of the body, especially the bodies of the Black community. Growing up, there really weren’t any healing practices, professionals or resources that associated with the bodies of Black people, especially Black women, and learning generations of healing and wellness rituals from my grandmother, even as a child, sparked my interest to be the next generation of healers and advocates for my community.

What does your company stand for?:

Our company aims to increase the awareness of transforming wombs that create magical orgasms, beautiful babies, happiness and amazing self-love with care, education, healing and advocating. My focus is to provide wellness guidance and healing services to individuals who are in need to conceive, have successfully conceived and are need of assistance for successful pregnancies, but also to those who have suffered the loss due miscarriage or abortion or for those who just want to live a life of healing and wellness in general. My mission is to heal and create improved bodies for those in need in the Black community.

Mystique Hargrove2-05.png

How do you create the life you want?:

Just by being my true self. I always grew up hiding myself and passion for my interest in healing and wellness even though I was raised around women who taught me to never be afraid to stand out and be different from the rest. Now I stand by their philosophies about one’s true identity and I create my life the way I want to always feel: with love, happiness, strength and liberation.

Where do you find inspiration?:

I find it through self-reflection and the teachings of the women in my family. Femininity and strength was always taught to be embraced. So I tap deep within myself through prayer, worship and meditation to embark on my journey of being more free in my Creator’s creativity within myself.

How has your business made you a better person?:

It has taught me how to be more free to be myself and in my truth. When I’m in my truth, I’m able to create a better healing practice for the community and remove any energetic blocks that may hinder the process of learning and growing more in my practice and knowledge of healing and wellness.

What makes you HUMAN?:

My flaws and loving all of them. My awareness that I have flaws is what makes me who I am. To not feel ashamed and to only embrace them more so I can feel and create a better me each day.

What inspired you to start your business and why?: My mother inspired me and my sister to start our business. Our mother has always been a "hustler mom" we have watched her start businesses and help other women start their businesses. She is very passionate about helping other women and we knew that when we shared our vision with our mother it would be a no-brainer! Anyway guess what...we were right! When we shared our idea and dream with our mom almost 5 years ago she was on board 100%! She was and is a single mom and every extra dime she had she puts in our business.

Our business, Suga Babes is both a product and service-based business. We sell all natural bath and body products and we host mobile spa parties for girls ages 5-13. We just created a signature line of products, le suga spotte! le suga spotte is where everything is sweet! This line consists of the following: whipped sugar scrubs, whipped body butters, lotion bars, sugar scrub cubes, lip balms, t-shirts, key chains, water tumblers, coffee travel tumblers, journals and key chains.

Our mobile spa parties are the BEST! We come to you and bring everything with us (except the kitchen sink). We bring towels, bowls, chairs, tables, hundreds of nail polishes, products and loads of fun!

What does your company stand for?: All things are POSSIBLE! It does not matter how old you are you can live your dream. You have to have faith and just take the leap of faith. Once you do that everything will fall into place. We believe that God will not give you a vision without provision. We should use our businesses as a vehicle or platform to share inspiration and hope.

We use our mobile spa parties as a platform to share this message with our young clients. At the beginning of each party, we share our story with them and inspire them that they too can live their dream. Our message also never allows the naysayers to get in your ear and live in there. It's hard work, however staying consistent and being persistent will pay off!

How do you create the life you want?: We are creating the life that we want by creating our own rules! By working hard and never letting up. By collaborating with other like-minded young girls and women. By being humble and compassionate. By being a servant and serving others. Most of all by leading by example and allowing God to lead us!

Where do you find inspiration?: In our mother and by celebrating others. When we see our peers win, we win and that is so inspiring.

How has your business made you a better person?: Our business has made me and my sister a better person by being able to serve others. We have learned a lot about business, customer service, money and so much. We have learned how to deal with difficult people, and how to resolve the situation peacefully and with grace. We see things a lot differently now. We know that money doesn't grow on trees and it takes hard work to get to where we want to go. We appreciate things more. We appreciate our mother's hustle or grind. Our business has truly humbled us. People do not have to spend their money with you and to see people support us is amazing!

layla-05.png

What makes you HUMAN?: Loving, serving and leaving an impact others. Our commission is to LOVE one another. We are to serve one another. And we are to leave an impact on the lives of others. If we can leave our handprint in just one life we have done our job. However, our goal is to leave our handprint on many lives!

Natasha Hunter - IMG_5695 copy.jpg

What inspired you to start your business and why?: I started my company due to the lack of positive images regarding dark skin women. Growing up with a darker skin tone often lead to me being the butt of jokes and overlooked by boys in my peer group or we were just sexualized, not really looked at as objects of affection. So I set out to change that connotation with a fun and affirming message that grew from that base.

What does your company stand for?: It stands for representation of Black Women's triumphs & trials specifically, but some of our themes can be inclusive of all women.

How do you create the life you want?: You create the life you want by first figuring out what it is that you want and secondly and very importantly action!! So many people stay stuck on dream mode -dreams are just whimsical things "I wish" or "I'd love"- and that's it. They'll never become a reality without a plan of action!

Hunter-05.png

Where do you find inspiration?: I find inspiration in just everyday living. My brand is touted as "the homegirls brand" because it's rooted in just being yourself, and what we do and are day to day. It's rooted in everyday day heroes aka the black woman.

How has your business made you a better person?: My business has made me a better person by helping me to stay less judgmental of other people and circumstances. It has helped to make me a little more outgoing and more confident when I realize other people have the same struggles that I do. It gives me another tool to be a better mother as my daughter is often with me when I go to different events, it's showing her how she can do her own thing as well.

What makes you HUMAN?: Biology. No I'm just kidding, really I think becoming a mother was just the most humanizing thing in my life EVER... like I feel things I wouldn't have known how to feel had I not given birth to a human that I legit care for, love, would kill for, fight for daily- just... is everything to me! You know, because of her I HAD to learn how to forgive, I HAD to learn how to accept not being perfect, I had to learn a lot in order to even begin to raise of well functioning human being!

Need help navigating today’s new media as a writer? Southern Styles & Steeds has become a digital gateway that fuses southern style and tech by way of country gal, Candace Dantes in McDonough, Georgia. She’s snatched great interviews and a built a space where she wants to encourage the next generation. Did we mention she’s KAYCUTE! Her boots and western style is memorable and timeless. Guess we can call her a real O-G! It’s been a 5-year and well worth it journey for this award-winning journalist. Grab a pen and take notes! Meet the Queen of Media in the South!

Candace Dantes - Cowgirl Candace 1.JPG

What inspired you to start your business and why?:

I've been a professional journalist for more than a decade now. Telling engaging, educational stories that motivate readers to take some sort of positive action has been in the fabric of my creative writing soul since high school. Throughout my editorial career, I started to realize friends, colleagues and sources were increasingly interested in my lifestyle as a fourth-generation farm girl, especially since my physical appearance doesn't match societal norms concerning the American West or rural living. This curiosity became the impetus for me to develop an online space that shares my country Western world growing up as a Georgia-based cowgirl. Also, knowing there are a lack of mentors in my neck of the woods for African-American girls who aspire to become journalists, editors and digital content creators, my site is a platform to help them navigate today's new media arena as a 21st-century writer. Since my site's inception five years ago, Southern Styles & Steeds has become my digital gateway to collaborate with influential individuals and international brands both home and abroad as well.

What does your company stand for?:

Southern Styles & Steeds stands for diversity and inclusion within the American West and print/digital media. It purposefully interjects the American-American experience and black beauty back into what country Western traditionally reflects in mainstream media. African-Americans have and always will contribute to Southern, country Western and rural culture. I grew up horseback riding, cultivating the land and participating in national rodeos with my family, so it's important for me to continue to celebrate and bring awareness about African-Americans' place inside this particular genre and throughout history.

How do you create the life you want?:

I'm an award-winning journalist, internationally published brand blogger and creative writer. It's apparent: I love to write. Because of my affinity for the traditional and digital pen, I've carved this creative niche online that reflects my personal life as a cowgirl. Simply by sharing my background and current lifestyle as a professional journalist and lifelong farm girl through storytelling, I've opened international doors to travel virtually and physically to places I would have never imagined. The stories I research, report on and write about are genuine, informative and life-changing. Because I enjoy creating valuable content, I'm able to merge my everyday life into my profession.

QueenAds-05.png

Where do you find inspiration?:

Most of my inspiration comes from my family farm, which is utterly breathtaking in Middle Georgia. I pull from coming-of-age memories from the farm, along with lessons learned from watching my country-loving grandparents/parents, working as a community newspaper reporter and spearheading national campaigns and projects as an editor in higher education. I often interview some of Small Town USA's most interesting residents, so they too give me more than enough incentive to craft thought-provoking content.

How has your business made you a better person?:

I'm bolder with sharing my experiences as an African-American woman in media and Southern cowgirl. Producing relevant content and earning once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to collaborate with big brands has invigorated me to pass down my knowledge to the next generation of African-American storytellers and those who have similar backwoods backgrounds as mine. Southern Styles & Steeds has become an awesome launch pad to make connections in unconventional areas and take risks in my writing. I've successfully turned these risks into money-making opportunities that others can incorporate into their editorial journey.

What makes you HUMAN?:

Once I'm on the family farm, that's as human as Cowgirl Candace can get. Wandering the land, breathing in nature and bonding with our horses puts me at peace. I always think clearer and more creatively when I'm roaming the countryside. It also reminds me of all the simple yet magnificent gifts God gave us.

Who doesn’t love a heavenly bowl of flavorful goodness? Today, we have a yummy treat for our Queens! Raised in New Orleans, That Soup Chic, aka Karima Kibble, creates organic, homemade, fresh soups that are guaranteed to keep you coming back for more. With everything from her famous Chicken Noodle Soup, to Turkey Chilli and even vegan and vegetarian options, there is something for everyone. Meet the Queen of Flavor!

Screen Shot 2018-01-18 at 9.12.19 AM.png

What inspired you to start your business and why?

I was inspired to create That Soup Chic after hitting a crossroad in my life. After 20 years in the music industry (Virtue), and divorced almost 8 years; I wanted something I could be proud of, but more importantly, something that I could leave for my 12-year-old daughter. I always knew I could cook but I didn’t know it would feed me.

What does your company stand for?

That Soup Chic stands for healthy BOLDNESS. I created this company out of sheer faith because I believe in eating well to be well. Raised in New Orleans by a health-conscious mother, I knew I had to share what she taught me. Healthy food that is good for you, but also tastes amazing is another staple for me.

It doesn’t have to be bland to be healthy! I want to encourage others to be bold about their health and make good choices.

How do you create the life you want?

I wrote a post over 10 years ago on MySpace... remember that social site?! I wrote “ Create what you want to be a part of” I have always done exactly that by trying my hand at everything people said I would fail at. If we put the work in, we reap the results and the benefits. Faithing it until I make it, and going after the impossible, that’s how I create the life I want. God is my source.

katrina-05.png

Where do you find inspiration?

My source of inspiration is God and my mother, Rebecca Trotter. The most faithful, kind-hearted, smartest, creative woman I know. She raised 6 children single-handedly--without a car, she cleaned houses to afford us the best education, made our clothes, got us to church every week, provided food, a roof over our heads, and lots of love. I cannot help but be inspired to become great.

How has your business made you a better person?

That Soup Chic allows me to care for people in a way that I care for my immediate family. You instantly want the best for everyone who seeks a better way of life. Eating healthy is a better way of life. I enjoy giving my all in the kitchen. It warms my heart to know I am needed, and when I am needed, it makes me want to give more and more of myself. That makes me better. I literally get goosebumps when people tell me how much they enjoy my soup. It motivates me to keep going. We all want to be better and we all can, when we feel we’re living out our purpose.

What makes you HUMAN?

What makes me human are my flaws. My mistakes. I cry, I get discouraged, I doubt, I need help and want help. I will never allow myself to not feel emotion. Emotion is what fuels creativity. Even in those times when I’m unsure of my next step or when I mess up an entire pot of soup with one wrong seasoning. Lol! I know something great will come from it.

Depression is plaguing many Queens, and there is danger in suffering in silence!

After battling depression for 30 years, Demetrice Smith started Creeping Vines Online, a forum created to unmask the stigma of mental illness and discuss healing for the hindering influences of depression.

“You call me ‘sister’, not because you are my blood, but because you understand the kind of tragedies we both have endured to come back into loving ourselves again and again” -Ijeoma Umebinyuo

32A0423-2-1140x1710.jpg

Depression is plaguing many Queens, and there is danger in suffering in silence--an open dialogue concerning mental health is crucial to survival. Many suffer directly, but nearly all of us love someone stranded in the abyss of depression whether we know it or not. After battling depression for 30 years, Demetrice Smith started Creeping Vines Online, a forum created to unmask the stigma of mental illness and discuss healing for the hindering influences of depression.

What does your company stand for?

We strive for awareness, assessments, and options for those dealing with depression and other mental illness concerns absent of stigma and shame.

How do you create the life you want?

Consistency, commitment, and dedication. Living a purposed life and doing the thing i was born to do helps me create the meaningful life I desire and the legacy that is the result. I push when I don’t think it matters to anyone else because i know how important mental health is to overall well being and physical health.

 Where do you find inspiration?

In people, and their stories. Everyone has a trial, testing, and a testimony. Finding the common ground that allows people to take their masks off and share their truth (absent of stigma) and receive help, is one key focus of my company.

How has your business made you a better person?

I remember how many masks I wore as well as the misconceptions about mental health and how shameful I was made to feel. “Join the conversation” is a mantra if my business that makes dialogue okay and offers this baseline communication as a starting point: “its okay to say you’re not okay.”

DemetriceSmith-05.png

 What makes you HUMAN?

My compassion and service to others. I’m a safe-place and allow people to be where they are without judgment or stigma. I feel the heartache of mothers not knowing how to reach a depressed or suicidal child or family member and being able to provide help, makes this journey worth it.

Start the year off sexy af with Alaiyo Waistbeads. Waistbeads are the perfect addition to any and all gorgeous body types. Queens can choose from an array of colorful patterns and styles. Not only are they gorgeous additions to that beautiful body of yours, they also serve as a great way to track weight loss goals, with many of us already thinking of improving our bodies for those summer trips. Speaking of summer bodies...have you seen how amazing waist beads look when worn with bikinis and half tops? Check them out, thank us later. Meet Jasai Madden in Canoga Park, CA

What inspired you to start your business and why?

Above all I am a mindfulness instructor. I teach people how to be with what is, exactly as it is, without needing it to be different. I use techniques of refraining to accomplish this including silence, stillness and fasting. Two and a half years ago waistbeads presented themselves to me as a perfect mindfulness tool. When I could no longer track down someone to sell me strands I began to make them out of sheer necessity.

What does your company stand for?

We are in the business of providing women with opportunities to see themselves more clearly and hold themselves more closely.

Jasai-05.png

How do you create the life you want?

I believe that you must be intentional. You must be able to speak to the life that you want and then move to give that speech life. In order to accomplish either of those things, we need to be fully present in what is going on at every moment and grateful for every opportunity to create our own bloom.

Where do you find inspiration?

I am inspired by the stories of people's lives. I am inspired by nature, kindness, growth and change.

How has your business made you a better person?

It has taught me to listen. It has taught me that people are most often acting from a genuine non-harmful (even if misguided) place and that compassion goes a long way towards understanding them and myself more fully.

What makes you HUMAN?

The truth. The willingness to see and accept truth about myself as well as the truth about other people. A compassionate acknowledgement that we are all doing the very best we can with what we have and what we know.

Less is more, especially when it comes to everyday jewelry. Today we would like to introduce all you Queens to the simplistic, yet unique designs of A.Battiste Quality Handmade Jewelry.  Everything you need to complete your swag, from earrings to bracelets, can be conveniently shipped to your front door. Adorn yourselves accordingly ;-) Check out this amazing interview with Alexandria Battiste, the brain behind these stunningly modest designs.

Alexandria Battiste - DSC_1519 (1).jpg

I started my business in college out of necessity, a little bit of competition and some optimism. I was starting my internship as a teacher, which left me unable to work, but I wanted to make a little extra cash. I had seen other girls making and selling jewelry on campus and I decided that I could do that, perhaps even better! I know, I know lol. My whole life I have been creative, and always dreamed of a creative business that could fund my life and this just seemed like a perfect fit. I started off with literal clay, making pendants, earrings and rings and then moved into metalwork where I rest and create, even now. In the present, the why for this business is so much more to me than extra cash or competition. This business represents a freedom that I desire to have in my life. A freedom that allows me to work at my own pace, inspire through my story, and truly build my own life.

What does your company stand for?

My company, I hope, inspires others to look and live well. I gathered the concept from a quote on a paint can that said "Wish not so much to live long as to live well." It's a quote from Benjamin Franklin that truly sums up how I'd like to live and inspire others to live through my life, and with the works of my hands. I am a teacher by trade, so I am instantly fulfilled with hugs and love from my students throughout the day. I worried that if I ever went full time I'd miss out on truly being able to touch people. Over the last year or so though, I've had stories of women buying pieces for their friends with cancer and their days being made because they felt beautiful in the face of sickness. I have had ladies purchase my affirmation bracelets because they needed a little more confidence. Perhaps my favorite stories though, are those of women who used my jewelry to make the most special day of their lives, their wedding day, complete. All in all, my company stands for women, and the wellness that I believe comes from looking your best.

Alexandria Battiste - zanjandcurve.jpg

How do you create the life you want?

As a person in the process of creating my ideal life, there's a lot that I have learned. I think that often in the pursuit of the lives we want, we think that it will be easy, glamorous, liberating. It is some of that, but I like to remind myself and others around me that creation, in any form, is often painful, arduous and intimidating. So, how is it that I create the life that I want? Well, I do the practical things. I work my 9 to 5 by day , I save money and spend many nights up making, researching and sometimes crying. I give myself breaks when I need them. I call on friends for help. I allow myself vulnerability. I read books that teach me things I don't know , I ask questions and listen to solid advice. I work hard. I plan ahead so that I can have time to have fun and take breaks. I remind myself that I don't have forever and that procrastination is not my friend. I do what I can while I can and hold myself accountable. I do a lot of the practical things, but I also do the spiritual things. I am a constant whisper of thank you's to God. I pray on my knees, something that I had forgotten was powerful. I speak to God in public--yes I'm a Chance fan. I give all that I have and pray that it is multiplied. I surrender, operate in faith and pray that it all works out. It usually does.

Where do you find inspiration?

Mostly in my dreams. I see myself, my ideal self and know that I have the ability to fulfill that space and be that person. I listen to people who have been where I am, the" Myleiks" and "Oprahs" of the world but also to the "Maris", "Malenes" and "Ms.Yolandas" of MY world. Those women who are successful in their own businesses, who have literally spoken into my life and encouraged me to keep going through my own insecurities and failures. My work, is also mostly inspired by my dreams. I sleep with a sketch pad near my bed. I have seen many of my designs in my subconscious and, it turns out, those are usually my best sellers.

How has your business made you a better person?

There are a thousand ways that this business has made me better. In the past year especially, it has made me more accountable to myself and others. It has taught me that tough times don't last, but tough people do. I know it's cliche but it is so true. Most importantly though, it has taught me that faith, excellence, preparation and hard work all go hand in hand. There is not success when one is lacking. This business has toughened my skin, strengthened my mind and opened my heart to new ways of being

 What makes you HUMAN?

Remembering myself makes me human. When I look at myself, I realize that I am but flesh on a lil ball floating in the vastness of this universe. I am reminded that my emotions are valid, my dreams are valid and able to be accomplished. I am reminded that I can be hurt, and hurt others and that at the end of this life, I too, will be dust. That makes me human, it keeps me grounded and pressing forward.

What inspired you to start your business and why?

I created the Pretty Girl Pillow because I’m a short hair lover and lash addict that was tired of sleeping on my arms and hanging off the bed trying to keep my hair and lashes intact. After having a dream about the pillow in April, I launched Pretty Girl Pillow June 3, 2017.

Tell us about your lovely creation.

The Pretty Girl Pillow is a custom u-shaped satin covered pillow that preserves and maintains your “Pretty” while you sleep. Experience fresher hairstyles and fuller eyelash extensions between maintenance appointments.

How do you create the life you want?

I believe that the life you want is created by strong work ethics, family, and prayer. I strive to keep my morals and values at the forefront of my everyday life. Family being my most prized possession, motivate me to work hard and dream big. Having my family on this entrepreneurial journey brings me tremendous joy and happiness. Blessed with my new business and my family here beside me, I’m living my best life, yet.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration from the powerful ladies that I have within my circle along with the many other women that I watch from afar. My brand is about empowering women and helping to boost self-esteem levels and to never let women forget that they are pretty no matter their color, shape, or background. The Pretty Girl Gang is so much deeper than what meets the eye.

How has your business made you a better person?

Pretty Girl Pillow has taught me a deeper level of discipline and the importance of creating boundaries. It has also made me stronger and shown me the significance of family and real relationships. Lastly, it has proven that there is nothing more powerful than a woman on a mission!

What makes you HUMAN?

There are a number of things that make me human. The one that sticks out the most is my love for people and my ability to operate with my heart. Secondly, I’m constantly striving for perfection, however, I understand that there are times that I’m faced with failure. Many times I stumble, but I’m able to find the inner strength to keep pushing. Lastly, with all of the success with Pretty Girl Pillow thus far, I remain humble and want nothing more than to inspire others to step out and pursue their own dreams and aspirations.

This Charming Business is a Rare Gem!

Meet Aesha Egbuna of Chioma's Charm in San Diego, CA! Read how Aesha uses gemstones to empower and to give back!

Imagine you’re in a wedding as a bridesmaid and you receive a gift from the bride. Your gift is a beautiful beaded piece that’s now lasted for a long period of time. Not only are your best girls rocking them, but soon after someone believed in you enough to go to Hobby Lobby, buy your first jewelry displays, tablecloths and encourages you to set up shop. That’s what happened to Aesha. By the way of her sweet idea for her bridesmaids and stepmother, Chioma’s Charm was formed. Not only are we swooning over her textured African ring and stackables -- but we love her vision. 25% of all sales are donated to a great cause. Meet Aesha Egbuna of Chioma's Charm in San Diego, CA!

What inspired you to start your business and why?: I wasn't planning to start a business. I decided to make gifts for my wedding party in the form of jewelry so that it would be from the heart and they could keep it afterwards. After my wedding I continued buying gemstones and making jewelry. My stepmother came over one day and saw all that I had created and put together my first jewelry party. I realized that people liked what I do and that day Chioma's Charm was born!

What does your company stand for?: My company is here to uplift the spirit! When you look good you feel good. I want to spread joy and encouragement to everyone that I meet and all of my clients. I work with gemstones which also offer metaphysical benefits to those who wear them. I make jewelry with a cause, for instance, my line of autism awareness pieces. 20% of my sales in this line are donated to a camp for special needs children www.campblessing.org Everything in my business is designed to touch someone in a way that changes their life or outlook for the better.

How do you create the life you want?: My husband is in the navy so we have to relocate often. We also have 3 beautiful children. I have been a personal jeweler full time for about 4 years now and I love it because I can work around my family and I can pack up my business and move it to wherever we may be stationed. I love what I do and it's important for me to help provide for my family and take care of them as well.

Where do you find inspiration?: Mostly from the gemstones that I use. I rarely have a design before choosing the stone. I let the stone tell me what to do. I have always loved rocks. When I was little I would collect rocks and gemstones. I can see that love manifesting itself now in my work!

How has your business made you a better person?: I am more open to people and building relationships. I am passionate about what I do and always enthusiastic. I have learned so much and am continuously setting new goals and learning new skills. I am eager to share what I have learned and most of all I continue to find ways to use my craft to help people.

What makes you HUMAN?: I am hard on myself at times, but that also helps me to keep striving for greatness.

What was your inspiration for starting your company?

Working in the beauty industry and my love of creativity sparked my interest in beauty and natural skin care products. I was encouraged and supported by my family and close friends so I started creating products in my studio. I choose aromas that are desirable to everyone and I also choose quality materials to obtain the best results for my customers

Why did you choose the name Island Kissez?

I chose the name Island Kissez to pay homage to my Caribbean background.  I was born on the beautiful island of St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands.  This beautiful destination is where I drew my love of art and creativity.  The variety of products were handcrafted to whisk you away to experience the essence of the Caribbean. The feel of the sandy beaches beneath your toes are contained in the body scrubs.

What does your company stand for?:

My company was created out of love. It's not only about making sales. It's about teaching people how to love themselves by taking excellent care of themselves.

What makes you HUMAN?:

I am human because I have empathy for others. I get to know people without judging them because of appearance. I respect myself and others. I love!

Thin or fine hair? This brand is specifically for you!

Thin or fine hair? This brand is specifically for you! Haircredible is a luxury hair care line catering to women with natural-fine, thin hair, and low porosity.

Thin or fine hair? This brand is specifically for you! There is such an enormous focus on thicker, fuller hair, that sometimes our sisters with thin/fine hair, or those who have certain health conditions which lead to hair loss, are left to suffer in silence. Haircredible is a luxury hair care line catering to women with natural-fine, thin hair, and low porosity.

What inspired you to create Haircredible?

I was inspired because I was going through a very depressing time in my life suffering from Alopecia. I had 10 huge bald spots that showed nothing but skin and needed the injections in my head just to get it to grow back. Once I got those painful injections, the doctor told me I needed to do 3 more treatments because my hair would not grow back at all without them. He said, "there is NO hair care line that is going to have your hair grow past that couple of strands". So, I thought, if there was no line to grow my hair, THEN I WILL CREATE IT! And that is exactly what I did.

What does your company stand for?

Our mission is to build confidence and empower our community of women with fine and thin hair. Many women aspire to be like the women they see publicized with thicker and fuller textures. We want our Queens to embrace their crowns and love their fine/thin hair because it’s beautiful too! You just have to know how to work it, that’s all. Our hair is not called FINE for no reason ;-)

What sets Haircredible apart from other hair companies?

What set us apart from other companies is the fact that we are not a "for all hair types" brand. We cater to Natural Fine Hair, Thin Hair, and Low Porosity. Our formulas are lightweight and high quality to make sure your fragile strands get all the vitamins it needs without overloading or weighing it down. Our hair can't use "for all hair types" products because what you use on your thick beautiful hair, we can’t! No one was catering to our Fine and Thin hair needs, so I made myself the face and voice of our community.

Should we expect any new products from Haircredible in the future?

Yes yes! We are actually working on another line right now to add to the collection! It’s super top secret, but OMG! I can’t wait to show off our line. So many lines are coming out with all these new oils, but with natural, fine hair and thin hair, too much oils will weigh our hair down completely. So, this ingredient and this new line we are playing around with--a specific fruit that is so tasty, yet filled with so many vitamins and OMG! There are so many benefits you can get from it and we are not just talking hair! So yes! Expect the new new in 2018! Owww!

We are also preparing for retail in 2018, so our main goal is to let our community know we are here and not going anywhere. Us women with fine and thin hair are very insecure, due to our fragile, lifeless strands and it makes it no better when only thicker, fuller textures are being promoted and shown off. If you are struggling with thin hair look no further! Haircredible is here for natural-fine and thin hair; it’s time to embrace your beautiful, fragile strands! Our hair isn’t called FINE for no reason now! ;-)

 What makes you HUMAN?:

Hmmm lol... the fact that I am a mom of 5, engaged to my lovely soon to be husband, and have been building my beauty empire since 2010. I am now blossoming and walking into my calling and finally getting Haircredible out to the world.
