What inspired you to start your business and why?: Growing up, I like many others had eczema and skin conditions which led me to use only one brand of soap. On the suggestion of a friend I used a handmade bar of soap that had mostly natural ingredients and it changed my perception of skincare. It lead me to research the differences in the major brands and why handmade was better for the consumer.  So many people are led to believe they have limited options if they have sensitive skin, but really there is a world of options. By making it myself, I understand each ingredients purpose and can share that knowledge with my customers.

What does your company stand for?: We believe everyone deserves a personal care routine that includes natural ingredients (Clays, oils, and botanicals) to help them recognize the beauty within. Our products are handcrafted in small batches to maintain quality and insure maximum freshness. We want each person to care about what goes on their body as much as they care about what goes into their body. Our products are made with love and I hope every customer can feel that as they use our home and body essentials.

How do you create the life you want?: I have an ever-changing vision board that details my life goals. As I grow, I  add or remove items from the board. I also use a bullet journal to document my day to day activities and this also serves as a reminder of how far I've come to reaching some goals or how far I still have to go. I try not to remain stagnant and I keep myself educated/engaged; as the world changes so does my life vision and my goals.

Queen [Recovered]-02.png

Where do you find inspiration?: For the company I find inspiration in nature, culture, in baked goods and in art. Actually, that's what inspires me in life as well. There is so much happening in the world, we just have to pay attention to see what is speaking to us.

How has your business made you a better person?: It is a blessing to be able to share my creativity and passion with people. As I talk to customers and learn about their issues, it brings me nothing but joy to provide them with a solution that actually works. The more feedback I receive, makes me want to reach more people and let them know about the different options available to them. I have also been fortunate enough to travel to various places to source ingredients. To know the exact location where an ingredient is coming from and how it will be used is rare in today's world. I am forever thankful to learn about the different cultures and experiences of the people that I source my ingredients from. I look forward to sharing more of these experiences with my customers to help them understand more about the quality ingredients that go into each Mahogany Essentials product.

What makes you HUMAN?: I'm not perfect, I make mistakes, I curse like a sailor and I judge the person in the mirror ten times harder than anyone else will. At the end of the day, I know that my task list may not be completed because of the deliberate choices I made during the day, but I tried my best and I made an attempt to get it accomplished. I also know tomorrow is another blank slate to try again.

Hosiery and lingerie for women of color

As a woman of color, the most frustrating thing is finding products in nude that fit our skin tone. The struggle ranges from finding the right foundation to tring to find the closest match in anything nude. Nadine Peisker said no more! Through her business Ownbrown UK Ltd in LONDON, Nadine transformed her personal solution into every woman of color solution. She is giving women of color an actual selection of nude in hosiery and lingerie. She’s has the Boss Babes who need nude for the workplace and she also has the Fierce Fashionistas who need to perfect their fit. That’s why we deemed Nadine to be Queen of the Nude.

As a woman of color, the most frustrating thing is finding products in nude that fit our skin tone. The struggle ranges from finding the right foundation to trying to find the closest match in anything nude. Nadine Peisker said no more! Through her business Ownbrown UK Ltd in LONDON, Nadine transformed her personal solution into every woman of color solution. She is giving women of color an actual selection of nude in hosiery and lingerie. She has the Boss Babes who need nude for the workplace and she also has the Fierce Fashionistas who need to perfect their fit. That’s why we deemed Nadine to be Queen of the Nude.

What inspired you to start your business and why?: As a black woman, I was always frustrated when it came to moments when I needed to find nude hosiery. We had a dress code in the law firm I was working for and I needed nude hosiery to meet clients or go to court. I didn’t want my clothing options to only be black tights or trousers. As one of the few black female lawyers in Switzerland, I did not want to be seen for my body, nor show off my underwear in such an environment. I wanted to be seen as and treated as professional as my male and female counterparts. I trawled through all major retailers to try and find a lingerie that fit my skin tone and found nothing.”

I discussed the issue with my family and friends and I quickly realized that I wasn’t alone in experiencing this “clothing” challenge. The fact of the matter is that I belong to the 85% of women in this world who are women of colour. We are not part of the nude hosiery and lingerie narrative.

My analysis of the situation also showed that brown skin comes in different shades, as not everyone has my specific complexion. So, I wanted to solve the problem not only for myself but also for other women of colour. On the basis of the findings, my entrepreneurial spirit woke up and Ownbrown was created in June 2015.

What does your company stand for?: We are driven by the love of freedom, the freedom to be and have the right things done. Nude hosiery and lingerie are ways of bringing more freedom to women of colour. I want to offer brown skin women the opportunity to wear what they want, whenever they want. Ownbrown is an invitation for all women of colour to rise up, shine, and stand up proudly in their own skin. This is what we call the freedom to be the ''best version of the person you are''.

How do you create the life you want?: I follow the saying. I surround myself with amazing people. I was lucky to start off with a core team of passionate professionals who helped me shape Ownbrown as it is right now.

Where do you find inspiration?: I look at the world with curiosity and with a love for life. I find inspiration through the amazing women I meet and through my own journey. Visiting museums, art galleries, flipping through magazines and Pinterest are sources of inspiration too.

In order to clear my mind, I also try to disconnect from our virtual world with so much electronics. I love to jump into nature and gain inspiration from colours, sounds, and experiences too.

How has your business made you a better person?: Being an entrepreneur has made me a better person as it full of challenges and forces you to get out your comfort zone and try new things. All of these have made me more humble and more empathetic to the world around me. It calls for a high level of understanding too of the value and worth of things and people.

What makes you HUMAN?: I'm human because you are and people are beautiful human beings. I am human because I understand my limits. I am an entrepreneur, yes, but I am also a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend. I value these relationships too and take time to nurture them, I am not all work work work.

Why We Love Counseling (And You Should, Too!!)

Love and relationships should be simple, but WE ALL could conjure a story on how complicated they can get. We probably even share similar stories on situations, but how we handled it probably differs. Sometimes a cry session with a tub of ice cream doesn’t help. So what do you do? Talk about it. Better yet talk to Paula Lenard. Through her business Paula Lenard Counseling, Paula takes being a Psychotherapist to another level. She has a true passion for helping people, especially ones that struggle with relationships, and it shows. It takes a special person to make it their mission to connect with others on a positive level. That is why we have deemed Paula Lenard the Queen of Relationships.

What inspired you to start your business and why?: I've always had a way of connecting with people. Having an hour long conversation with a stranger in a bathroom is not unusual for me. I think being a Psychotherapist is just in my blood. Meeting people and learning their story, their journey is intriguing to me.

As a Psychotherapist, I work with clients who struggle in the area or relationships. My clients consist of individuals who find themselves in and out of love, continuously attracting the wrong kind of mate, or working on personal growth (self-esteem, knowing their worth).

I also see clients who are contemplating divorce / in the divorce process and post-divorce. Last but not least, I work with clients on how to be a stellar co-parent.

What does your company stand for?: My company stands for helping someone feel light, happy and whole again so they may be the best version of themselves, and as a result raise kids who resemble that same happy and wholeness.

How do you create the life you want?: I create the life I want by making sure I take care of myself. Self-care is significant and most of us focus on our kids, our mates, our jobs, etc. But the simple truth is, if we don't take care of ourselves then it shows up in all our relationships with all of those we are trying to take care of. Taking care of yourself can be a lot of different things to a lot of different people. For me personally taking care of myself comes in the form of yoga, reading a good book, a hot cup of tea, prayer, a mani and pedi, and I just started meditating. So I create the life I want by taking care of me.

Queen [Recovered]-02 (1).png

Where do you find inspiration?: I find inspiration almost on a daily basis just simply connecting with others. Probably my biggest inspiration of all is my oldest son. He's 26 years old and he himself is an entrepreneur in the Real estate Investment arena. Every single night we talk and have an "accountability meeting". I absolutely love this. We chat about what we did that day. What went well? Was there a goal? Did we meet that goal? What prevented us from meeting that goal? What are our plans for tomorrow? This keeps me and my son connected and we both look forward to the conversation. He's always been my inspiration and at 26 he still inspires me on a daily basis. We both push each other daily in our fields, and we agree to never make a "Plan B" because that means we don't have confidence that our "Plan A" will work.

How has your business made you a better person?: My business makes me a better person because on a daily basis I get the privilege of working with amazing clients to help them find hope even when they feel their situation is hopeless.

What makes you HUMAN?: Simply caring about others, and caring whether you make or break their day. This is huge. The way you handle situations says so much about your character. You can be at a restaurant and return your meal because it wasn't prepared to your liking, but how you handle that return says so much about you. Be kind. It's significant.

We think Ashley Crews is the epitome of taking a concept and making it your own.  We can get used to a stylist coming by to empower and transform our look. We see you GIRL and dub you the Queen of the natural boost!

What inspired you to start your business and why?: My inspiration came from an old colleague turned friend. She saw my talent in hair when I would style my own natural hair in cute braided and twisted updos when I would go to work. At first, she didn’t believe me but when I told her the history she strongly encouraged me to start a business to style other people’s hair besides my own. I have been styling hair on and off for about 19 years now. I was 9 years old when I started and by the time I was 13 I had developed an impressive clientele. When I got into high school my focus became college oriented because I didn’t value hair as much to make it a career at the time. It wasn’t until after getting my masters and fully emerging in the natural hair epidemic that I began to do hair again. I wanted to be a vessel in the natural hair movement, helping newly naturals with hair advice and styling as well as working moms with little girls who needed help styling their hair at an affordable rate and convenient location (their home). My friend believed in me and I am glad I took her advice. HairVentionZ will be 4 years strong November 2018 and growing. Thank you Risi.

What does your company stand for?: I created HairVentionZ to inspire self-love, self-care, and wellness through natural hair care styling and wellness coaching

How do you create the life you want?: I created the life I want by taking advantage of all opportunities presented to me and seeking the opportunities that I would like to be a part of. I also take part in developing a schedule that is convenient for me to do what I love best in the hair and health industry.

Queen [Recovered]-02 Ashley Crewquote.png

Where do you find inspiration?: My inspiration comes from my clients. They are the ones who have patience with me as well. They always give me compliments on my work and some, even, work with me when I express to them I may not be the best at the style they are trying to achieve. My clients inspire me to do better, be better, and keep going!

How has your business made you a better person?: Running my business has taught me to have a lot of patience! Allowing me to deal with different personalities using a client-centered approach. My business made me a better person because I am able to put others needs before mine and there’s value in that. I became a servant to my clients and I am well respected by them. I realize I touch more hearts than hair and that goes a long way. For that, I am grateful to have such a great gift...

What makes you HUMAN?: Mistakes make me HUMAN! Along with fear. For so many years I was fearful of stepping out of the “norm”. But when I did and started my business it helped me to become a stronger human being, allowing me to realize my strengths and focusing more on what I’m good at rather than what I struggle with. It allowed me to be confident in my work creating my own lane and not an imitation of others. A true definition of what a HUMAN should be.

Relationships are an important aspect of our social realm. It's a way to stay connected outside of ourselves. The saddest part is not knowing when and how to walk away from unhealthy ones. Through her business gmichelle, Michelle White from Atlanta, GA, ends her time as a bystander and becomes the ultimate advocate in relationship education. With extensive experience as a licensed social worker, clinical therapist and statewide trainer working with people who have survived interpersonal trauma, domestic violence, and child abuse, Michelle understand how difficult it is to overcome the pain felt from unsafe relationships. Michelle’s web platform has resources, podcasts, downloads and an array of tools for guided meditation and ways to help you find a therapist. Her latest edition, “Self Explore, Self Restore: A Guided Self-Care Journal Created to Support Your Relationship with Yourself” By helping to create an environment for people to feel safe, we have deemed Michelle White as Queen of the Safe Space.

What inspired you to start your business and why?: As a licensed social worker in the domestic violence and child abuse fields, I have learned how important it is to have a healthy relationship with your loved ones. Experiencing abuse, trauma, and pain from the people we love and build families with is an indescribable feeling. Through gmichelle and the Self Explore, Self Restore guided self-care journal, I wanted to create a safe space for folks to learn about the relationship dynamics in a friend, family, work and intimate relationships. My hope is to help foster a community that is educated in healthy and unhealthy relationship dynamics, treasure the relationship we have with ourselves and find opportunities to heal through gmichelle.

What does your company stand for?: gmichelle is my first and middle names, Gennifer Michelle. I was named after my mother and my grandmother spelled Gennifer with a G! My company stands for healthy relationships, understanding how abuse and violence impacts relationships and highlighting the importance of loving and caring for yourself.

How do you create the life you want?: I create the life I want through envisioning what an ideal life looks like for me and taking small and manageable steps to get there. My idea for gmichelle and the Self Explore, Self Restore journal started by just writing down self-care ideas that I would share with survivors when I was a domestic violence counselor. The ideas accumulated into a journal with guides and prompt for anyone to use. By following through with each small step, I'm getting closer to creating the life that I want!

Queen [Recovered]-02.png

Where do you find inspiration?: I find inspiration in others! I love connecting with people who create, share and develop resources for healthy living. I find inspiration in hearing others stories of empowerment and learning what steps they took to get where they are now. I am in awe of the people and IG accounts I follow, as there are so many engaging and diverse ways for folks to find healing. I want to learn about all of them!

How has your business made you a better person?: This is such an insightful question. Beginning gmichelle and the Self Explore, Self Restore guided journal has helped me remember that I am a creative person that loves helping others. My business had made me appreciate all that I contribute to the self-love, self-care world and I am happier, more productive and more engaged in the work that I do now that I have started this business. I'm grateful for this process.

What makes you HUMAN?: Feeling all the feelings makes me human! It can be difficult, but being connected to my emotions reminds me that I am grounded and natural and a part of this earth. And ya know, I'm also not alone in feeling all the feelings! Yay humans!

In this crazy world, we live in, you have to understand you're not alone sis. Mental stability, self care and self love are all necessary for strength and peace of mind. That's why we are deeming Courtney Pack as the Queen of Beauty.Happiness.Healing

What inspired you to start your business and why?: In 2014, after my mother passed away, I started to have moments where I felt like I needed to take on her tasks because she did SO MUCH in our family, while barely having enough time to care for herself. To be honest, I cannot remember the last time my mother did anything related to self-care because she was always doing for others…and so I tried to pick up the same tasks plus more…in order to keep my mind off of the hurt and pain, only to dream about my grief throughout the night. So I wasn’t really facing my pain because I was trying to throw sugar on it every day. My depression and habit to allow me to be overworked led to a great deal of stress and no time for my thoughts, feelings, self-love, or healing. But what I also realized is that what my mother did is exactly what every woman does naturally as a nurturer, take on a huge amount of responsibilities so that others can be well.

Now, to this day, people always ask me how I would allow myself and my body to take on so much stress? Great question, I just felt like it was naturally in me, as a woman, to overfill my plate with entrees that did not nourish nor do me any good mentally. Because at the end of the day, my plate for my inner self was always empty; I gave and gave until I couldn’t give anymore, and still tried to give. But the more I thought I was Wonder Woman, the greater the stress, and this time my body reacted. Everybody that knows me, knows that my help for people does not stop, ever. Up to the point where I experienced the burden of major depression, I was eating well on a plant-based diet, getting back into running, and making sure I was getting plenty of rest. But soon enough, my stress prevailed and I had to come to terms with my own body. At this moment, not only was I beginning to find joy in silence and soul searching, but I also began experimenting with natural essential oils, herbs, and spices to repair and soothe my body. These essential oils are depression aids, anxiety fighters, and health boosters, and are included in each product that I make for Beauty.Happiness.Healing.

What does your company stand for?: Beauty.Happiness.Healing LLC, carries a collection of therapeutic handmade small batch goods including whipped shea body butters, body scrubs, and soy wax candles. All products are handmade by me, and include an essential oil or ingredient that is beneficial for mental stability, self-love, meditation, and inner focus while empowering and uplifting women. The product line inspiration stems from personal experiences that opened my heart and mind to focus more on self love and self care.

 Mission:

1. To connect with women by creating a product line focused on self-care and self-love.

2. To empower and strengthen women through daily affirmations and motivational messages.

3. To spread the mission of the product and collaborate with various female entrepreneurs to build a strong community of women.

How do you create the life you want?: Being selfish, creating a self-care plan of action, being content, staying humble, and remaining determined.

QueenAds [Recovered]-21.png

Where do you find inspiration?: My inspiration comes from my own silence and self-discovery.I've learned that in order for me to be an effective creator, I have to tap into my own inner healing and remember why I started.

How has your business made you a better person?: My business has played a HUGE role in my self-development. It has taught me to focus more on my inner peace, built my confidence, allowed me to express myself and tell my story, and molded me into a stronger woman.

What makes you HUMAN?: Transparency. I am not perfect, and I make sure that I share every piece of my experience with my community of women because you never what the next person is going through. I am very transparent about my journey, and I plan on creating a platform for women to continue to do so.

Angel Bradshaw has it figured it out and it wasn’t easy. She’s turned her hardships into motivation. She’s taken life’s turns and choose the road of positivity. Now the mother of three, Angel’s company Covered By Angel in Sumter, SC, has multiple meanings. It’s a reminder of God’s love for us, that we are not forgotten and that to everything there’s a distinct purpose. With her business selling headwraps, Angels encourages us to take life how it comes and work with what we already have. Be you, Be Different and meet the queen, Angel.

What inspired you to start your business and why?: Covered was birthed from my love of all things different, unique and of meaning. Not just an accessory but a statement! Our goal is to help you enhance what is already there. It’s my hope that Covered by Angel serves as a reminder that you will always be protected by His love. May you always find shelter and protection as you travel along life’s journey.

What does your company stand for?: Covered comes from Psalms 914:4 which simply reminds us that "He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection."  This scripture is what helped me through some of the times in my life where I didn't know how I got through them. Those moments, such as becoming a mother at the age of 17 (my son is now 21), losing my father on my 21st birthday, suffering from three ectopic pregnancies, going through three years of fertility treatments and giving birth to two beautiful babies (my twins are now 5). And 'by Angel' comes from my first name.

How do you create the life you want?: To create the life you want, you must simply live. All our lives have already been planned in the way that God wanted to be, so it may not be the life that we thought we wanted but it's definitely the life that's wanted for us. Create purposeful moments by living through and growing through the moments that you live.

QueenAds [Recovered]-21.png

Where do you find inspiration?: I find my inspiration in my children and in my grandson. I also find it from women that wear my wraps and have expressed to me how much they love them.

How has your business made you a better person?: My business reminds me daily that I am a Queen. My wraps also serve as a crown, not only to me but to others. Covered also comes with a story and I'm able to share this story with so many people through my wraps.

What makes you HUMAN?: Making Mistake makes me human. However, learning from them makes aware that I am HUMAN.

Teaching young people about life and the things that come with being OF COLOR is both difficult and at times heartbreaking to do, but she’s taking on the job with pride by offering practical solutions! That's why we have deemed Tajh Sutton “Queen of the Young People of Color”.

QueenAds [Recovered]-22.png

What inspired you to start your business and why?: While I was a college sophomore, the wrongful execution of Troy Davis coupled with the murder of Trayvon Martin and ongoing conversations spurred by Occupy Wall Street compelled me to leave college where I was studying childhood education to put what I already knew about social justice, performance art and critical thought into practice to create my own education organization. My goal was to bring relatable, inspiring and tangible solutions and conversations to students, families and communities of color.

Tajh Sutton - 7FFA3728-5571-4131-AD48-5E9E87B6031F.jpeg

What does your company stand for?: Young People of Color stands for youth empowerment, rethinking how we interact with society and one another, holistic and communal healing through self reflection and admission of societal ills such as racism and sexism and bridge building between generations and ethnic ties within the diaspora. It’s sister organization, Loc Love Lives Here, aims to curate conversations and safe spaces for Black Women and girls to discuss the intricacies of the politics of Black beauty.

How do you create the life you want?: I sincerely believe in being the change you want to see and that’s why I love working with young people. When provided with love, space to grow, holistic information and a wide range of options, they astound and impress me every time, and they give me hope for the future. By creating workshops, lessons and programming that inspires them to think critically, be empowered and use their innate creativity to create solutions to our problems, I truly believe I’m helping shape tomorrow’s leaders and it’s an absolute honor.

Where do you find inspiration?: I’m inspired by Black Women living their truth. People who live and share authentically. Individuals who can make mistakes publicly, own them and learn from them. From Lupita Nyongo to Janelle Monáe to Cardi B, I appreciate Queens with all kinds of crowns and I don’t expect them to be infallible.

sutton-21.png

How has your business made you a better person?: Children are an absolute breath of fresh air and as a mom and educator I think each facet of my life makes me better at the other. As a mom and mentor I’m more open and empathetic in general because kids require so much patience and you have to be quick on your feet with little ones! Adaptation is the key to this thing called life.

What makes you HUMAN?: My vulnerability and genuine love for people mke some human. It also makes me unlikeable to some folks because I believe only the truth can enable us go REALLY love each other and see one another’s humanity. I take it in stride because James Baldwin said ‘if I love you, it’s my duty to make you aware of the things you don’t see.’

It's Time To Turn-Up for Plant-Based Living!

Back in the day being vegan was a taboo. It was one of those things that seemed way too hard and way too expensive. Many of us made the mistake of ignoring the impact of eating less animal products thinking that it would be way too hard. But like many, Kyna Willis in Atlanta, GA, found herself suffering from fibroids. Inspired to make the transition to a plant-based diet, Kyna later started a web-series to share her journey. With her web-series, The Turnip, Kyna is introducing well respected African American restaurant owners who are adding a little flava to the vegan and plant-based lifestyle. As a publicist, Kyna saw that she could not only give exposure to these owners, but also educate Black & Caribbean women on how a plant-based diet eliminated most of her fibroids. Kyna said NO to suffering in silence and said yes to the green life. We dub Kyna the queen of plant-based, TURN-UP!

Kyna said NO to suffering in silence and said yes to the green life. We dub Kyna the queen of plant-based, TURN-UP!

KynaWillis-22.png

What inspired you to start your business and why?: “The Turnip”, a new, exciting yet insightful web series that focuses on plant-based living and features some of the most well respected African Americans restaurant owners in the plant-based & vegan community. I wanted to show that plant based living is all inclusive and not exclusive to a certain group and dispel the myth of plant based living is just tofu and salads.

I was inspired to create The Turnip as an African American woman advocate for plant-based living and women's health. I was introduced to plant-based living as a result of suffering from fibroids for more than a decade. I suffered in silence for years, in and out of hospitals due to severe anemia and deep vein thrombosis (blood clots), all caused by these fibroids in my uterus. However, I knew surgery wasn't for me. After learning that more than 70 % of African American and Caribbean women will suffer from fibroids by the age of 50, I knew that a full plant-based diet would be the ONLY answer to my problem. With the help of Gessie Thompson, Dr. Amsu and Dr. Amun from the HOPE Beyond Fibroid Program, I transitioned into a full plant-based/fruitarian diet in May of 2016. Since then, I have been able to eliminate most of my fibroids and have become a mentor and coach to other African American women seeking to transition to plant-based living due to fibroids or just a better quality of life.

With the creation of "The Turnip," this allows me another medium, a much broader way to spread the word of plant-based eating and educate other women who are suffering in silence from fibroids.

What does your company stand for?: The Turnip stands for plant-based living with soul.

How do you create the life you want?: I create the life I want by being honest with myself. I understand my limitations. I understand what I can and can't do, and I am fine with that. I am not afraid to say no and I am no longer afraid of failing. I actually understand the power of saying no. I now can take personal time for myself instead of allowing work to lead my life. It gives me a newfound confidence. It gives me a sense of peace and freedom.

no-21.png

Where do you find inspiration?: I find inspiration in seeing the transformation in others. I love receiving emails and text messages from other women sharing in their victories of going plant-based or incorporating plant-based meals into their diets. That makes it all worthwhile.

How has your business made you a better person?: I know that "The Turnip" has made me a better person by making me more vulnerable in sharing my story. By sharing this journey with others, I have been able to help other women heal. It has also made me a more honest person by sharing my truth no matter how hurtful it is for me to face.

What makes you HUMAN?: My ability to be vulnerable, my honesty, and my willingness to not be perfect. I don't like to make mistakes and I try to prevent them, but if I do make a mistake, I am willing to dust myself off and keep trying. I don't beat myself up with making mistakes anymore. That what makes me HUMAN!

The Elephant in The Room: Alopecia.

Time to talk about the elephant in the room when it comes to hair: Alopecia. None of my sisters should feel ashamed about it and there are solutions to help. Kamika King decided to take back her hair and went a step further by sharing it with the world. Through her business Makeba Co & The I Am Grooming Co, Kamika is giving people organic products that provide results. Reviving hair and healing hearts, we have deemed Kamika Queen of Alopecia Care.

Kamika-22.png

What inspired you to start your business and why?: I originally started my business because I was struggling with alopecia hair loss and couldn't find reliable products to help me deal with those issues. Soon after as the business began to take off I added to our men's line which has done very well. Now I have two brands that support our community and that effectively address personal care concerns.

What does your company stand for?: In one word, healing! Our brand is about healing personal care issues, and empowering individuals to take back their hair and their skin. We make products that are effective, organic, and that people enjoy using, but most importantly our products do what they say they'll do and make customers feel good about the choices that they've made to use them.

How do you create the life you want?: Be consistent and be clear on what your vision is. I am living my best life yet because I laid aside a lot of my superficial desires and focused on honing in on the heart of the matter. What's most important to me? To me, time is everything. To not be obligated in areas that are not a necessity for my life. I love just beeing able to vege out after a long day! So I have chosen to rid myself of a lot of superficial things, places and people that get in the way of me getting the piece of life that I want. I also have gotten rid of a lot of financial woes so now I can spend my money in peace.  That's creating the life you want.

Where do you find inspiration?: All around me! I just like to sit and think and ideas generally tend to come.

How has your business made you a better person?: Once I finally began to take my business seriously I began to become more consistent. I was reliable before, but consistency and endurance were things that I cultivated as a business owner. It is also made me more confident in myself. Confident that I could make things happen without needing income or a job. When you only have yourself to rely on it puts a fire under you.

What makes you HUMAN?: My need and willingness to have other people in my life to share this journey with. My desire to help others makes me human. Being empathetic and loving other people is important to have a full life. I have a full life. So I use my gifts to be a blessing to other people and to continue to create the best life possible.

Reminder: Inner Beauty is Just As Important!

Creating the life you want means going after what it takes to obtain it. You have to surround yourself with positive energy and believe that what you put out is what you will get back. Always remember, people will talk about you regardless of what you do and how you do it, so GIVE THEM SOMETHING GREAT TO TALK ABOUT. My business has help me become more social and outgoing. It's taught me to open my mind to new experiences! The world of makeup is so much more than blush, eyeshadow and colors. It's about empowering, motivating, sharing and most of all development of self love. Mental health does not equate to crazy. Those are FALSE ideas and assumptions! EVERYONE should take responsible measures to maintain a positive, healthy mind. Life will be life forever, so there are times where situations become too much for you to bear alone. Tatiana Smith has taken her love for others and brought TSmith Counseling to life. Helping people work through this maze we call life, Tatiana is most def the Queen of Mental Awareness.

What inspired you to start your business and why?: What inspired me to start my business is first my entrepreneurial spirit and then my passion for assisting others during difficult times. What I love about being a mental health professional is seeing people accept themselves for who they are, loving themselves where they are and being OK with not being OK. I love to see people accept their differences and walking into their greatness. This also inspired me to start a podcast called Talking Off The Couch about mental health and wellness and breaking the stigma within the communities of color. I want to get the word out that going to talk to a mental health professional is healthy and that it does not mean you are crazy.

What does your company stand for?: TSmith Counseling stands for healing, growth and change. It is Understanding Your Before so that you may have a Greater After and Knowing that you are in Charge of Your Change!

How do you create the life you want?: The life I have is full of fulfilment and I create it by making sure that first I love and take care of myself and needs, by having a church community, relationship with Christ, quite time and fun. Then, I focus on what my purpose is which is helping others heal. Service is big for me as well.

Where do you find inspiration?: I find inspiration from my parents and just the resiliency of our people. It's the lessons that my parents have taught me to look at life as glass half full. Also, my inspiration are those who are on a mental health journey and the are not ashamed. They walk with grace knowing that they are growing.

How has your business made you a better person?: My business has made me a better person because it has stretched me to the lengths and tested my faith that I didn't know I had. It has showed me that I am a Boss Chick in every sense of the word. It has proven that what you put your mind too can be achieved in the proper timing.

What makes you HUMAN?: What makes me HUMAN is that I have the spirit of procrastination as many of us do, but it empowers me to do better and know that what I tell my those who utilize my services is true that I am in charge of my change.

She found an opportunity to help those who may be struggling in their self care routine in Tucson, Arizona. This beauty line, caters to the needs of those who suffer from hyperpigmentation, dehydration, dark under-eye circles, acne, and oiliness and in ways that are safe, natural, and healthy. We salute you queen for catering to the multicultural beauty space that's still much younger and less evolved!

What inspired you to start your business and why?: I was inspired by a void in the market where I lived. The diversity in Tucson is not great. I could not find any products suitable for my dry skin and eczema. To find products for black women in stores in Tucson is like finding a needle in a haystack. Not being able to find the right products inspired me to create my own. Not only did I create my own products but I decided to make them all natural and organic.

What does your company stand for?: My company stands for a tribe of people who demand better quality products, less chemicals in skincare and more representation on shelves for women who want vitamin-rich ingredients without all of the junk.

Asheya Dixon.jpg

How do you create the life you want?: I find it very simple to just decide the exact life you want and then carve that path for yourself. I've learned over the years that the only thing holding me back to anything I want to accomplish is "ME". You literally just decide what you want then work towards that goal every day one foot at a time until you get it!

Where do you find inspiration?: I find inspiration in all of the letters I receive from women everywhere saying that they resonate with me and that I'm inspiring. It's little things like that, that makes me push harder to do better and represent myself well. Knowing that you literally have people rooting for you makes you push harder knowing that when you win in a sense they win as well.

How has your business made you a better person?: My business has turned me into an unstoppable woman. BRWN Beauty has given me the courage, the drive and ambition to do whatever I want. The people I have met along the journey have all inspired me in some shape or form to be the best version of myself. I know that if it wasn't for BRWN Beauty I might not be the woman that I am today.

What makes you HUMAN?: What makes me human is that I have my weaknesses. I'm like any other person I have setbacks, flaws, I feel defeated at times, sometimes I want to just throw the towel in. What separates me from most is how I handle obstacles. You either let life and obstacles get to you or you see them as an opportunity. I choose opportunity because I love a good challenge!

After recognizing she needed to care for herself as she would later become a patient, Amea claimed the crown as the Queen of Wellness for Professionals. In the words of Migos, you gotta “Walk it like You talk it.”

What inspired you to start your business and why?: I was a nurse for 9 years whose recently launched a Wellness Meetup Group called Wellness Love Tribe. At my heaviest I was 320 pounds, my anxiety was at an all-time high. While doing diabetic teaching with one of my patients, I instantly realized that this patient was dependent upon mean to be an example and expected me to give him the correct information to get healthy. I was not providing the best care being overweight and I was consumed with the stress of the job. I immediately went home and watched “what the health” and it changed my life forever. I researched and adopted a healthy lifestyle and have lost a total of 82 pounds. During my weight loss journey, l realize there were other medical professionals dealing with the same issues. We as medical professionals are so busy taking care of the patients, that we forget to take care of ourselves. Due to the lack of human interaction in today’s society, The Wellness Love Tribe was born.

What does your company stand for?: There is a lack of human connection, which is why we created a platform for Medical Professionals to gain wellness support while staying connected. Our goal is that Medical Professionals find new ways to incorporate “healthy” into their lifestyle daily, by discovering brands, activities and food in our community.

How do you create the life you want?: I create the life I Want by first remembering my journey is bigger than me, it’s about being blessed in order to bless others. I’m very persistent at achieving new levels in life.

Where do you find inspiration?: I’m inspired by past struggles & creating a better future.

How has your business made you a better person?: My business has made me a better person by being held accountable. I have other medical professionals been inspired by my journey, so it helps me want to become a better person overall.

What makes you HUMAN?: My mistakes make me human and the fact that l’m able to learn from them. I realized that it’s OK to struggle in some areas of your life, but what matters most is that you take the necessary steps daily to get better.

With hard work, Fawnne from Virginia Beach, VA is showing her children that you can work hard to build the life you’ve always wanted. She didn’t despise her small beginnings and for that, she’s the queen of Salon Noa!

What inspired you to start your business and why?: My children inspired me to start my business. I wanted to show them that if you work hard you can have anything. I started my business with one station, one sink, and one chair and I came in daily, worked hard and took the fruits of my labor and put it back into the business and watched it grow. Having my children by my side along the way to see my dream grow was life changing. I just wanted to be a great example for them.

What does your company stand for?: We are a company that offers a great salon experience. I wanted to offer a small salon setting that gives great customer service, professional haircare that includes NATURAL HAIRSTYLING and an AMAZING experience. A place where anyone will feel welcome and leave feeling beautiful.

How do you create the life you want?: I set goals and share them with family and close friends and ask for their support. They hold me and make sure I stay on track, including daily phone calls and motivating emails. With a solid support system it will allow me to grow on a daily basis and stay true to myself. I would not be where I am without them.

upload.jpg

Where do you find inspiration?: I find inspiration in other entrepreneurs, seeing other small business owners taking this daily challenge of going in and working hard and staying open. This is a time where many storefront businesses close their doors. So to know that they are pushing forward through difficult times gives me inspiration to know that this is something I can do to be successful.

How has your business made you a better person?: Watching the salon grow and become a brand that many love, support and need, it will put a fire inside to make you want to do more. Those people count on you and want you to do well. It will cause you to do those self checks on a daily basis and never give up.

What makes you HUMAN?: The high and the lows, having those moments when I cry, realizing I’m not perfect, the laughter, the good times. It's those life changing moments embracing the highs and lows will make you human.

Sure, we smell nice, but wouldn’t it be great to smell nice AND nourish your skin? Of course it would! Shontelle Flowers has broken down the wall of doubt. She's created a way for natural candles and skincare products to smell great with her business FlowEsScents. Based in Saint Paul, MN, FlowEsScents is founded on eco-friendly principles and backed by Shontelle’s the passionate spirit. We deem Shontelle the Queen of Scents!

What inspired you to start your business and why?: I have always loved candles and skincare products. Little did I know that many of those candles and skincare products I loved so much were full of chemicals that were harmful to our bodies as well as harmful to the environment. Creating eco-friendly candles and skin care products and sharing them with the world is my passion and the inspiration behind FlowEsScents.

What does your company stand for?: Our goal at FlowEsScents is to create meaningful customer experiences by using high-quality, natural ingredients in our candles and skincare products that are not harmful to our environment or our customers.

How do you create the life you want?: One of the ways that I create the life I want is by implementing a self-care routine. I used to run myself crazy trying to be everything to everyone, but at the end of the day, I was depleted. I create the life I want by putting myself first. I can’t be any good to anyone else if I am not good to myself. As an entrepreneur, I find it challenging maintaining various areas of my life, but I have learned to prioritize and implement realistic time management goals for myself.

Where do you find inspiration?: I find inspiration through other small business entrepreneurs. I follow several handmade creatives on social media and I have watched their businesses grow over the years. Their successes let me know that I can do it too and hard work definitely pays off. I also find inspiration through my spirituality and myself. 2017 has been a year of personal and spiritual growth for me. I find inspiration in seeing how I have overcome some tough challenges in the past year and to be where I am today is amazing!

How has your business made you a better person?: One of the ways that my business has taught me to be a better person is that it has taught me patience. There are many challenges that come with entrepreneurship. Success doesn’t happen overnight. I get discouraged and frustrated at times, and self-doubt rears its ugly head from time to time. My business has also taught me to be resourceful and creative because things do not always turn out the way I plan, so I have to go with the flow. My business has also taught me how to have tough skin. I deal with people online and face to face. No two customers are the same. What one customer loves, another one dislikes. I have learned that you can’t take things personally as an entrepreneur and to leave my ego at the door.

What makes you HUMAN?: What makes me human is compassion, empathy and kindness. We are living in a cold world and we are seeing less compassion, kindness and empathy. I found that kindness goes such a long way. I truly believe that the world would be a much better place if more people showed kindness and compassion towards one another. Showing empathy towards others helps me put myself in the other person’s shoes instead of judging them. It is easy to be kind to others when situations are pleasant, but how I show up in unpleasant situations is by showing kindness, empathy and compassion and that is what makes me human.

….You can be well on your way!

What inspired you to start your business and why?:

I have always loved thrifting, ever since I was a kid! All the great treasures just waiting to be found there. As I grew older, and started coming into my style, I wanted to be different and stand out. I knew shopping at the thrift stores would allow this with all the unique pieces you can find! I started becoming creative with my styles and how I would put them together. I then wanted to offer this to others! A way to be able to buy affordable vintage pieces for those also wanting to express their style but may not have the eye or patience to sift through the countless number of items in a thrift store. Thus, ByoVintage (BeYourOwnVintage) was developed!

What does your company stand for?:

It stands for self expression. Being true to yourself and bringing out your creativity and uniqueness through Thrifted or vintage pieces!

Where do you find inspiration?:

I find inspiration in everything! Nature, design, history, fashion, my inner thoughts. I’m inspired by everything!

How has your business made you a better person?:

It’s made me a better person because I love helping people and it’s allowed me to do that more! It’s helped me become an entrepreneur which takes a different mindset and aspire to just be and do more!

From Teenager to Web Designer

We all know the pain of creating a website or looking for a trustworthy designer. It seems to be a scarcity and some platforms just don’t give us the customizable options we’re longing for. As a child, we dream of the things we want to grow up to be; sometimes it actually happens and sometimes there is something better in store for us. There are the occasional times that we end up doing what we want, but in a different manner. NOYADESIGNS birthed from the transformation of a canvas artist to a web designer. By way of her father who needed Christina Gwira’s services during his personal time of need. Christina expected the challenge of web designing in the 11th grade. She’s six years in the game and not looking back — No wonder Christina Gwira is now deemed the Queen of the Web.

What inspired you to start your business and why?: When I was younger, I wanted to be an artist. However, due to circumstances of life, my parents put me through music school as opposed to helping my artistic side to grow. However, that passion and love for visual art was still there. One day in the 11th grade, my father handed me three big computer books and asked me to build his website for him. I took on the challenge and the passion that had lay dormant in my heart for all those years came to life. Instead of painting with brush and pencil, I was painting with Javascript, PHP and HTML. After making and building several websites, I decided that I'd start as a freelancer, offering heavily discounted graphic and web design work. Every waking moment was spent learning Joomla, or playing in Photoshop, or downloading Illustrator brushes. Quickly, the amount of requests that were being sent my way for my web and graphic work increased, but people didn't feel as comfortable working with a freelancer. So I created NOYADESIGNS in 2012, at the time, a one-woman creative design firm for small businesses.

What does your company stand for?: My company motto is, "We are your digital marketing firm", and that's exactly what our core belief is. We've discovered that many small businesses and entrepreneurs feel that their web designer, graphics person or social media manager is not on their side. We want to encourage and assure our clients - and all that come through our doors - that we are there for you and your business. We want to see entrepreneurs grow their brands and businesses with solid digital marketing assets for web, print and media.

How do you create the life you want?: Everyday when I bring out my black notebook and write out my to-do list, I am day-by-day working on creating the life that I want to live.

Where do you find inspiration?: As cliché as it sounds, I find inspiration everywhere and within everything I see. From the ads and work of other designers, to the dust within my keyboard (I should probably clean that!), I'm inspired in everyt…

Where do you find inspiration?: As cliché as it sounds, I find inspiration everywhere and within everything I see. From the ads and work of other designers, to the dust within my keyboard (I should probably clean that!), I'm inspired in everything. Even if something I see doesn't automatically become used when designing or creating, I always see myself going back into that log in my mind and pulling out bits and bobs to use in the present.

How has your business made you a better person?: My business has broken me out of my shell. It gets me out of the house. It helps with my well-being.

What makes you HUMAN?: My emotions.
